Friday’s Fave Five – March 3

Every evening this week when I close the curtains in my west-facing woman cave, I have seen two bright planets. A little research tells me they are Jupiter and Venus. I’m not especially interested in astronomy but, as with many things in the natural world, the appearance of the two brilliant lights so close to one another lifts my thoughts to the Creator and the marvel of all there is to wonder about in the world. These things ground me when I feel the weight of current events and life in general heavy on my mind.

I needed to visit a clinic this week to have a minor medical issue tended to and, in the process, got a family doctor for both Gerry and me. We returned to Canada from Washington state nine years ago and in all that time living in B.C. have been unable to get a doctor (though we received excellent care from nurse practitioners). We’ve been Saskatchewan residents for less than three months and now have a doctor. It still seems somewhat surreal.

The home improvement work we’ve had done around here is complete. Gerry has to put together three storage cabinets for my art area and that will allow me to tidy up significantly. This week, we put down interlocking foam tiles in front of my painting table and hung plastic on the wall behind it so I don’t ruin the new paint job with my play. Today, we’ll pick up a pair of bedside tables for Makiya’s bedroom in preparation for her coming to stay with us for a while.

My thoughts are turning to spring, and wondering what surprises we’ll discover when the snow melts (which is happening bit by bit). Every time I take Maya out in the backyard I survey the area with my future garden plot in mind and, sometimes, peek at the raised planter boxes on my neighbour’s deck and wonder where I can get something similar.

Yesterday, we drove out to the Buffalo Pound Provincial Park. My family used to spend time out there in our Scamper travel trailer. It was a gorgeous day for a drive. We drove to the far end of the lake where the buffalo herd lives, saw deer on the way back, scoped out hiking trails, and stood at the top of a hill and looked around at the beautiful area surrounding us. I predict we’ll spend a good measure of time out there with our cameras when mud season passes (which is already starting).

It’s been a good week. I’m carrying burdens, but that’s part of life. I give them to the Creator to carry when they feel especially heavy, and even when they don’t.
